ABSTRACT Garcinia madruno (Kunth) Hammel is a neotropical tree that naturally occurs in terra firme forests and is important as a source of income and medicine for Amazonian populations. This study describes and compares the morphoanatomical responses of plants under conditions of stress and normoxia. Young plants of Garcinia madruno were subjected to two water regimes: daily controlled irrigation and waterlogged for 84 days. Hypertrophic lenticels, adventitious roots and anatomical characteristics of the roots and leaves were evaluated on days 0, 21, 42, 63 and 84. There were no changes in leaf structure, but cracks and hypertrophic lenticels appeared on the stems, there was an increase in blackness of the roots and the plants formed adventitious roots to...

Yield and fruit quality of apple from conventional and organic production systems PAB
Amarante,Cassandro Vidal Talamini do; Steffens,Cristiano André; Mafra,Álvaro Luiz; Albuquerque,Jackson Adriano.
The objective of this study was to assess the yield and fruit quality of apple produced with a conventional and an organic production systems in Southern Brazil. The orchards consisted of alternate rows from 10 to 12-year old 'Royal Gala' and 'Fuji' apple trees on M.7 rootstocks, grown as slender spindles, on 4x6 m spacing. Eighteen apple trees of each cultivar and management system were randomly selected and assessed for nutrition, flowering, fruit set, yield, and fruit quality during two growing seasons (2002/2003 and 2003/2004). The organic management system resulted in lower concentrations of K, Mg, and N in leaves and fruits, and in smaller fruits for both cultivars, and lower fruit yield for 'Fuji' than from the conventional production system. For...

DEMAND AND COMPETITION AMONG SUPPLY SOURCES: THE INDONESIAN FRUIT IMPORT MARKET AgEcon
Andayani, Sri R.M.; Tilley, Daniel S..
Indonesia is a rapidly growing and competitive market for U.S. fruit. A restricted, source-differentiated, almost ideal demand system is estimated for apples, oranges, grapes, and other fruit in Indonesia. The Marshallian expenditure elasticities for U.S. fruit are estimated to be between 1.01 and 1.21. For grapes and oranges, competition with other fruits appears to be more important that competition with other supply sources. For apples, strong source-differentiated substitution relationships are found.

Assessment of fruits during shelf-life storage using biospeckle laser CIGR Journal
Ansari, Mohammad Zaheer; Nirala, Anil Kumar.
Biospeckle is a phenomenon that interprets an optical pattern formed by illuminating a surface under changes with coherent light.  These patterns are usually analyzed by numerical as well as graphical methods.  Present work evaluated the application of different numerical methods to analyze biospeckle for the assessment of fresh mature fruits.  Quantitative first and second order moments namely Inertia moment (IM) and Absolute Values of Differences (AVD), based on the recording of time history of speckle pattern were used.  Results showed that during shelf-life storage of ten days of different fruits, the IM and AVD values were found to decrease.  In addition, to assess the impact of ripening of fruits on their optical properties, speckle grain size was...

Ripening and quality of 'Laetitia' plums following harvest and cold storage as affected by inhibition of ethylene action PAB
Argenta,Luiz Carlos; Krammes,Juliana Golin; Megguer,Clarice Aparecida; Amarante,Cassandro Vidal Talamini; Mattheis,James.
The inhibition of ethylene action by 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) extends shelf and storage life of many climacteric fruits. However, 1-MCP appears to have limited effects on stone fruit depending on specie and cultivar. The effects of 1-MCP on ripening and quality of 'Laetitia' plums were determined during ripening at 23ºC following harvest and cold storage. Japanese plums (Prunus salicina, cv. Laetitia) were harvested at mature pre-climacteric stage, cooled to 2ºC within 36 hours of harvest and then treated with 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.50 or 1.00 muL L-1 of 1-MCP at 1°C for 24 hours. Following treatment, fruits were either held at 23ºC for 16 days or stored at 1ºC for 50 days. Fruits were removed from cold storage at 10-day intervals and allowed to ripe at 23°C...

Distribution and recycling of canopy nitrogen storage reserves in sweet cherry (Prunus avium) fruiting branches following 15N-urea foliar applications after harvest Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Ayala,Marlene; Bañados,Pilar; Thielemann,Mariana; Toro,Román.
In sweet cherries, accumulated nitrogen (N) stores from the previous fall support early spring growth. To complement the N supply in the soil, Chilean growers use foliar urea applications after harvest. Information on the effectiveness of foliar N applications in sweet cherry is lacking. To study the canopy distribution of N applied as urea foliar sprays, an experiment using a "Bing"/"Gisela®6" ("GI®6") sweet cherry orchard was carried out in 2009/2010 in Chile (35° 09' 53'' S, 71° 20' 43'' W). The objective was to investigate N distribution and recycling in 3-year-old fruiting branches. A total of 120 branches (one per tree) were labeled using 15N-urea. 15N-urea was applied to the whole branch on four separate dates or treatments (TR) after fruit harvest:...

Ban,Dean; Goreta Ban,Smiljana; Oplanic,Milan; Horvat,Josipa; Novak,Bruno; Zanic,Katja; Znidarcic,Dragan.
Worldwide, a significant increase in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus [Thunb.] Matsum. & Nakai) growing areas has been registered in the last few years. In-row plant spacing has a significant effect on the growth and yield of watermelon, and can enhance competition for water and nutrients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of in-row plant spacing (1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 m) and arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) fungi Glomus mosseae inoculations on watermelon growth and yield under field conditions during 2003, 2004, and 2005 year. In 2003, the main vine length, number of leaves, and number of lateral branches were increased quadratically as the in-row plant spacing increased from 1.0 to 2.5. With an increase in the in-row plant spacing the...

In silico prediction of gene expression patterns in Citrus flavedo Genet. Mol. Biol.
Berger,Irving J.; Freitas-Astúa,Juliana; Reis,Marcelo S.; Targon,Maria Luísa P.N.; Machado,Marcos A..
Out of the 18,942 flavedo expressed sequences (clusters plus singletons) in Citrus sinensis from the Citrus EST Project (CitEST), 25 were statistically supported to be differentially expressed in this tissue after a double in silico hybridization strategy against leaf-, flower-, and bark-derived ESTs. Five of them, two terpene synthases and three O-methyltransferases, are absent in the other citrus tissues with concomitant 2x2 statistics, supporting the hypothesis that they are putative flavedo-specific expressed sequences. The pattern of these differentially expressed sequences during fruit development suggests that most of them are developmentally regulated. Some expressed gene products, including a putative germin-like protein highly expressed in...
